Poultry ventilation can feel complicated, but Dr. Michael Czarick says it doesn’t have to be guesswork. In a recent conversation, he shared how the Poultry 411 app helps growers make more confident, science-based decisions about ventilation and environmental control.

A Conversation With Dr. Michael Czarick About the Poultry 411 App

At poultry meetings and ventilation conferences across the industry, one name tends to come up often: Dr. Michael Czarick.

As an Extension Engineer and Senior Public Service Associate in the Department of Poultry Science at the University of Georgia, Dr. Czarick has spent decades helping growers better understand poultry house ventilation and environmental control.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with him to discuss a topic that’s generating interest among growers: the Poultry 411 app.

After hearing about the app at a Tennessee Poultry Association meeting, we wanted to learn more about what motivated its development, what problems it helps solve and how growers can use it to better manage their operations.

For Dr. Czarick, the answer starts with one simple idea: ventilation is science.

Why Ventilation Is More Than Just Air Movement

“Ventilation is really a science,” Dr. Czarick explained during the conversation.

When many people think about ventilation, they immediately focus on oxygen, ammonia or airflow. But according to Dr. Czarick, one of the biggest priorities is actually moisture control.

Every day, birds add moisture to the poultry house through water consumption. The challenge is removing that moisture effectively to maintain healthier air quality, better litter conditions and stronger bird performance.

“The better of a job we do removing moisture,” Dr. Czarick explained, “the more control we’ll have over air quality, bird health and performance.”

That understanding became a driving force behind the Poultry 411 app.

What Is the Poultry 411 App?

According to Dr. Czarick, Poultry 411 is primarily a collection of calculators designed to help growers make more informed environmental decisions.

Rather than relying on guesswork or generalized recommendations, growers can input real-world data and receive practical guidance based on science.

The app includes several tools tailored to poultry production.

Minimum Ventilation Calculator

One of the app’s most practical features helps growers calculate minimum ventilation rates using:

  • Water consumption
  • Inside house conditions
  • Outside weather conditions
  • Fan selection

Because water usage directly affects moisture levels, this tool helps growers determine how much ventilation is actually needed.

House Tightness Calculator

Dr. Czarick also highlighted the importance of understanding what static pressure tests truly mean.

The house tightness calculator helps growers estimate:

  • Potential fuel waste during cold, windy conditions
  • Inlet performance during minimum ventilation
  • How efficiently the house is operating

Instead of simply knowing whether pressure readings are “good” or “bad,” growers gain measurable insights tied to real operating conditions.

Evaporative Cooling Calculator

Hot weather ventilation presents another challenge.

The app’s evaporative cooling calculator helps estimate:

  • Incoming air temperature through cooling pads
  • Humidity levels entering the house
  • Water usage expectations

These insights can help growers prepare for heat management more effectively.

Litter Drying and Tunnel Ventilation Tools

Additional calculators focus on:

  • Litter drying conditions
  • Tunnel ventilation requirements
  • Fan capacity and environmental control needs

Together, the tools are designed to simplify complex decisions and support more consistent management.

More Than an App: Decades of Poultry Knowledge

During the interview, Dr. Czarick explained that Poultry 411 is more than just calculators.

The app also connects growers to decades of educational resources, including:

For growers wanting to better understand ventilation principles, it creates a centralized place to access trusted information.

Taking the Guesswork Out of Poultry Production

One of the biggest themes throughout Allen’s conversation with Dr. Czarick was transparency.

Growers often want to know why recommendations are being made.

Why ventilate a certain amount?
Why target specific pressure levels?
Why make environmental adjustments?

Dr. Czarick emphasized that growers should ask those questions.

Rather than expecting blind trust, Poultry 411 aims to provide the reasoning, data and science behind poultry house management decisions.

That kind of practical, measurable information is especially valuable as poultry production becomes increasingly precise.

Bringing Poultry Management to the Smartphone

Many of the app’s tools originally existed as Excel spreadsheets.

But as technology evolved, so did grower habits.

Today, smartphones have become an everyday management tool for many poultry producers, making a mobile app a more practical way to put ventilation science directly into growers’ hands.

Why Poultry 411 Matters

At its core, the Poultry 411 app is about helping growers make better decisions with greater confidence.

By combining research, farm-tested science and practical calculators, Dr. Czarick hopes to remove some of the uncertainty surrounding poultry ventilation and environmental control.

For growers looking to better understand the “why” behind ventilation management, Poultry 411 offers a practical place to start. The Poultry 411 app is available for download in the App Store for iPhone users and Google Play for Android users.
