Ammonia is the silent profit killer
Respiratory Damage
Ammonia above 25 ppm damages the respiratory epithelium, making birds susceptible to airsacculitis and other respiratory diseases. Most growers can't smell it until it's already above 20 ppm.
Poor Paw Quality
Wet, ammonia-rich litter burns foot pads. Poor paw scores mean downgrades at the plant — and with paw export premiums, that's real money left on the table.
Shortened Litter Life
Frequent cleanouts are expensive — labor, equipment, bedding costs, and downtime. Growers typically estimate each cleanout at $3,000-5,000.
How It Works
| Feature | What It Means for You |
|---|---|
| Beneficial microbial blend | Competitive exclusion — good microbes outcompete the ammonia-producing bacteria in litter |
| 40-60% ammonia reduction | Measurable improvement in house air quality from first application |
| Extends litter cycles | Go 2-3 additional flocks between cleanouts, saving $3,000-5,000 per cleanout avoided |
| Improves paw quality | Drier litter with less ammonia means better foot pad scores and fewer plant downgrades |
| Spray or drench application | Apply with standard farm spray equipment — no specialized gear needed |
| Compatible with all litter types | Works on pine shavings, rice hulls, peanut hulls, and reused litter |
Application: Pump sprayer or boom sprayer
New litter: • Apply 1 gallon per 10,000 sq ft of house floor • Spray evenly over litter surface before bird placement • Reapply at mid-flock (day 21-28 for broilers) Reused litter: • Apply 1.5 gallons per 10,000 sq ft at decake • Second application at bird placement • Mid-flock touch-up as needed based on ammonia readings Heavy ammonia situations: • Double initial application rate • Test ammonia at 24 and 48 hours • Adjust ongoing rate based on readings
Ammonia: The Number You Can’t Ignore
Ammonia is the single biggest air quality challenge in commercial poultry production. Above 25 ppm, it damages the respiratory lining, opening the door to secondary infections. Above 50 ppm, it measurably reduces growth rate and feed conversion. Most growers can’t detect ammonia by smell until it’s already above 20 ppm — by then, birds have been breathing it for days.
Litter Life attacks the problem at the source. Instead of chemically binding ammonia after it’s produced (like alum or PLT), it shifts the microbial balance in the litter so less ammonia is generated in the first place.
The Economics of Better Litter
Every cleanout costs $3,000-5,000 when you factor in labor, equipment, bedding, and downtime. If Litter Life extends your litter by 2-3 flocks, that’s one fewer cleanout per year — $3,000-5,000 back in your pocket.
Add the paw quality improvement (fewer plant downgrades, access to export premiums) and the livability gains from better air quality, and the ROI compounds quickly. Most growers report that Litter Life pays for itself within the first flock.
How It Works With Your Program
Litter Life is designed to integrate with your existing management. Apply at decake or before bird placement with standard spray equipment. It’s compatible with Big Ole Bird probiotics, Catalyst vitamins, and Desecticide beetle control — together, they create a comprehensive house management program.

We were cleaning out every 4 flocks. With Litter Life, we're going 7 before we need to. That's $15,000 in cleanout costs I'm not spending. The ammonia readings are consistently under 15 ppm.
Paw quality was our biggest plant downgrade. Since starting Litter Life, we've gone from C-grade paws to A-grade consistently. The export premium alone pays for the product three times over.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Litter Life reduce ammonia?
Litter Life introduces beneficial microbes that outcompete the bacteria responsible for converting uric acid to ammonia. By shifting the microbial balance in the litter, it reduces ammonia production at the source rather than masking it.
How quickly does it work?
It depends on what you're treating. For ammonia control, apply at least 7-14 days before bird placement so the microbial population can establish and begin competing with ammonia-producing bacteria. For bacteria issues (disease pressure, pathogen control), get it out at least a day or two before your ammonia product — Litter Life needs time to colonize before a chemical product hits the litter. Bottom line: earlier is always better, but even a few days gives the microbes a head start.
Is it safe for birds?
Yes. Litter Life contains naturally occurring beneficial microbes — the same types found in healthy soil and animal environments. There's no withdrawal period and no chemical residue.
Can I use it with PLT (poultry litter treatment) or alum?
Litter Life works through biological mechanisms rather than chemical pH manipulation. It can be used alongside chemical treatments, but many growers find they can reduce or eliminate chemical PLT after establishing a Litter Life program.
How many flocks can I go between cleanouts?
Results vary by management and stocking density, but most growers report extending litter life by 2-3 additional flocks. Some operations have gone 8+ flocks on the same litter with consistent Litter Life application.
