Whether you are working a backyard vegetable garden or centennial row-crop farm, every grower wants to find higher yield, better crop quality and cost savings, all while serving as a good steward of the land. Replenishing humic material can achieve all those goals at once. Research shows that a humic acid soil conditioner can increase yield in a host of ways: Improving seed germination, providing better soil texture to hold and distribute water, enabling the plant to absorb nitrogen more efficiently and helping to fight disease.
“Humic substances affect soil fertility by making nutrients more readily available to plants. Humic acids also promote plant growth by enabling root penetration in soils. Humic acid also acts in decreasing water evaporation from soils.” USDA Report
In studies throughout the world, humic substances have been shown to increase yields of corn and oats, tobacco roots, soybeans, peanuts, and clover; chicory plants and other crops. Those studies also seem to indicate that the quality of the humate is important to the amount of increased yield or quality in the crop. Using our products, a study was conducted in 2005 with “Georgia Boy” onions on test plots in South Georgia to see if the grower got higher yield through application of a humic acid and fertilizer combination. The results bore out the anecdotal evidence: Growers using humic acid and fertilizer harvested bigger bulbs and had 20% more marketable produce over those who used only standard inputs. Scientists in the Soil Ecology Laboratory at Ohio State University were working with peppers when they found that humic acid “can produce significant increases in overall plant growth and productivity” and “relatively large responses at low application rates.” In other studies dating back 40 years, crops with humic substances applied to the soil or leaves have had increased kernel weight in peanuts and greater yield in bean, potatoes, grain and soybeans. A study of tomatoes grown in a greenhouse had around 20 percent higher yield with humic acid, depending on the cultivar. Research has consistently shown improved quality and yield in row crop vegetables, containerized nursery plants and grains. Because the humic acid improves the plant’s uptake and use of nutrients, it can reduce the amount of nitrogen needed by as much as 40%.
  • Improves water retention and discourages runoff by improving the tilth of the soil.
  • Prevents nutrient loss from leaching and helps the soil absorb and hold nutrients.
  • Increases the porosity of soil.
  • Makes fertilizers and other nutrients more effective by increasing uptake.
  • Increases cation exchange in the soil.
  • Restores the natural balance of microbes.
  • Reduces the cost of fertilization by reducing the loss from the soil and increases crop yield naturally.
  • Our products are approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for organic growing.
